Heavy Crash for Chilean Henrik Von Appen

Chilean skier Henrik Von Appen is in doubt for the Winter Olympics after suffering a heavy crash during training for the World Cup event in Bormio, Italy.

Henrik Von Appen had to be airlifted out of the event Alpine Skiing World Cup event in Bormio. Early reports claimed a broken leg but that seems not to be the case. Von Appen showed positivity on an Instagram post, hoping to return in time for the Winter Olympics. The Chilean described a report in Washington Post that he had broken both tibia and fibula as “fake news”.

In similar circumstances, Von Appen had a huge crash in the previous year’s event, but managed to escape without injury that time. He was not so lucky this time around, cutting the forerarm with his skis, causing damage to the nerves.

Von Appen is one of a contingent of Chileans trying to earn enough points to qualify for the Winter Olympics. The results will be released at the end of January. If he can recover in time, Von Appen would be representing Chile in his second Winter Olympics.
