The Great Elías Sánchez
The Estadio Calvo y Bascuñán reopened with a debacle. The ceremony was highlighted by two things – Chilean President Sebastián Piñera referring to Lionel Sánchez as Elías and Colombian team America’s inability to arrive. Their late arrival will mean the match for the hosts will be played after midnight.
The reopening of the stadium will host a clash between Colo Colo and Universidad Católica, with the Antofgasta vs America game to follow.
Piñera, whose gaffes are notorious, was planning to honour Lionel Sánchez in his speech, however the name that came out was Elías Sánchez, some kind of cross between midfielder Sánchez, Chile’s most capped international player, and defender Elías Figueroa, known as Chile’s greatest player of all time.
Antofagasta will be one of the cities that takes part in hosting the Copa America in 2015.
