Gonzalo Jara Misses Again

After cutting ties with Nottingham Forest, Gonzalo Jara moved to the Bundesliga with Mainz 05. Five was once again the unlucky number for the former Huachipato man.

Jara, whose solid World Cup campaign ended with the infamous ball bouncing off the post and back into the field of play to see Chile once again defeated at the World Cup by Brazil, was called upon to take another penalty, and missed again in the German Cup match between Mainz 05 and Chemnitzer FC.

The Germans may have forgotten Jara’s World Cup efforts after celebrating their victory of the tournament, but the defender may be unlikely to take his place in the penalty lineup after the only one to miss in the shootout. After Jara’s failure on the fourth kick, third division club Chemnitzer were able to take victory, winning the shootout 5-4 after a high scoring battle. The match finished 3-3 in regular time, and went on to see scores level at 5-5 after extra time.

Rather than the post, this time it was opposition goalkeeper Phillip Pentke who blocked the Chilean’s shot.

It was better news for some of Chile’s young guns, with Nicolás Castillo returning to the scoresheet in Belgium and Ángelo Henríquez debuting with victory for Dinamo Zagreb.
