Referee Osses prepares for World Cup bow

While Chile open their World Cup campaign against Australia tomorrow, their refereeing team have to wait another day to make their bow.
Referee Enrique Osses, plus assistants Carlos Astroza and Sergio Román, will take charge of Saturday´s Group C clash between Ivory Coast and Japan (9pm, Chilean time). The match takes place at the Arena das Dunas, of Natal.
It marks the culmination of a long process for the team of officials. Back in 2011, 52 teams of officials were chosen at the start of the World Cup process and only the top 25 made the cut.
Osses, 40, began studying refereeing 20 years ago and made his professional debut in 1998. In 2005, he stepped up to become a FIFA referee and in 2012, he was chosen as the best referee in South American by the continent’s ruling body, the Conmebol.
Last year, he refereed the Confederations Cup semi-final between Brazil and Uruguay, accompanied by the assistants that will work alongside him at the World Cup.
Despite all the accolades, Osses hasn´t been exempt from criticism in Chile, often over his handling of Universidad de Chile matches.
