0Homeless World Cup Announces Dates for Chile 2014
Chile will host the Homeless World Cup in 2014, with dates announced for twelfth version of the global event. The tournament will take place between October 19 and 26 in Santiago’s Plaza de Armas.
After Chile’s men won the Homeless World Cup for the first time in Mexico 2012, they were unable to defend the title in Poland. The women went one place up, going from third to second place after going down in the final. This year it will be Chile’s turn to host.
Acción Total’s Futbol Calle program has ensured that Chile has had a regular attendance at the Homeless World Cup, attending every year since 2006. 2013 saw a national tour in order to select a team that truly represented Chile.
The eight day tournament will take place in Plaza de Armas, the centrepiece of downtown Santiago, which is currently being renovated.
Over 500 players will participate, with teams from more than 60 nations represented. Brazil (men’s) and Mexico (women’s) are the defending champions after winning in Poznan.
Below is Kyle Waller’s short documentary The Homeless Goal, which focuses on two members of the Chilean team that participated in Poland.
