0Chilean Daniela Callejas Strikes Again
With 2014 just three months old, Chile have seen a second woman defend a world title in a combat sport. After Carolina Rodríguez continued her undefeated boxing run, Daniela Callejas was too strong in Thailand.
In the ancient city of Ayuthuya, Thailand, the Chilean fighter competed in the World Muay Boran Championships alongside her partner Juan Carlos Coría. Both finished the tournament as champions.
“GANEEEEEEE!!! BICAMPEONA MUNDIAL DE MUAY THAI!!!” the Muy Thai fighter said on her Facebook page. She described “Hurácan” Coría as more than just a partner, saying “First of all, I’d like to thank everyone who has lived every happiness and sadness with me in this difficult process. My master, coach, sports psychologist, nutritionist, partner and best friend, the great Huracán Coría.”
It followed the double victory for Chile in the road cycling race in the South American Games. Aside from being goal medalists, Gonzalo Garrido and Paola Muñoz are also an item.
The tournament attracted support from Thailand’s tourism authorities, with people continuing to travel to Thailand from around the world to train and watch Muy Thai, a sport with thousands of years of history.
“We see an increasing number of people interesting and practicing traditional Thai Boxing – Muay Thai. And as such, there is a real market that we can target. Especially as Muay Thai is a perfect blend of culture, sport and tradition,” said Kittipong Prapattong.
Callejas fought in the under 57 kg event, facing Panagiota Georgiou (Cyprus).
