0Double Delight for Chileans in Córdoba
Both Nicolás Jarry and Hans Podlipnik have reached the semi-final of the Challenger tournament in Córdoba. Victory there could see a Chilean battle in the final.
Despite being unseeded, Tomaslav Brkic and Podlipnik caused an upset against the third seeds, taking down Guillermo Durán and Renzo Olivo in a three set affair. Despite their local knowledge, the Argentinean pair were unable to take advantage of the mixed bag that Brkic and Podlipnik served up.
After the win for “H-Pod” in the singles over top 100 player Joao Souza, there was another surprise victory, with Durán currently ranked 93 in doubles. The victory will also give the Chilean confidence for his battle with Facundo Bagnis in the singles. A win there would take him into the top 100, while he will return to the top of the list of Chilean players regardless of the result.
It is three consecutive Challenger semi-finals for Jarry, with Brazil’s Marcelo Demoliner and the young Chilean taking revenge on Bagnis and Martin Alund, who were too strong in the San Juan event. While many players have large discrepancies in their singles and doubles rankings, Jarry is almost level on both rankings. He ranks 222 in doubles and 224 in singles.
Second seeds Guido Pella and Maximo González will be waiting for Jarry and Demoliner in the semi-final, while Podlipnik and his Brkic will face Hugo Dellien and Juan Ignacio Londero.
Despite being held at the Córdoba Lawn Tennis Club, the event is played on a clay surface.
