Daniela Seguel Moves Ahead in Australian Open Qualifying

After defending multiple match points in the second set, Chile’s Daniela Seguel came back to defeat Jamie Loeb in the first round of Australian Open qualifying.

Despite the lower ranking, La Pantera managed to pass through to the second round of Australian Open qualifying. After going down 6-2 in the first set, Seguel looked to be in trouble. Saving three match points in the second set, she was able to win 7-5 before powering through the final set for a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory.

The victory will see Seguel enter the top 200. It is the first time she has passed the first round of qualifying in a Grand Slam, though she had come through qualifying for Wimbledon in the Doubles. Seguel will lead the charge for Chile’s Fed Cup campaign upon returning from Australia. The next challenge will be to pass Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk to reach the final round of qualifying.
