0Super Solaria speeds to record Derby triumph
A bumper crowd of more than 50,000 race-goers saw Solaria win the 129th edition of the Derby in record time at the Valparaíso Sporting Club.
Viña del Mar – A field of 16 lined up for the famous race, but there was no stopping second-favourite Solaria, ridden by jockey Gonzalo Ulloa, from taking the first prize.
And the mare, trained by Juan Pablo Baeza, did it in style with a record time over the 2,400 metre course of 2 mins, 23.34 secs, winning by a comfortable seven lengths.
That left Kasper and Salto de Indio, ridden by Bernardo León and Héctor Barríos, trailing behind.
The big disappointment was one of the favourites, Sposito, ridden by Luis Torres, that could only finish tenth.
Almost $170.5 million was bet on the race, another record. The Derby was one of a huge bill of 28 races on the day and, as usual, attracted horse racing fans from all over the country.
