Homeless World Cup Holds Fundraiser in Scotland

With Edinburgh Castle looming in the background, teams from across Europe have been competing in a fundraiser for the Homeless World Cup.

The three day event attracted teams from Northern Ireland, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Italy, Scotland and Norway to compete in a fundraising event for the global sporting phenomenon, which has become one of the most successful sporting social programs, helping change people’s lives through street soccer.

Known in Chile as Futbol Calle, the Homeless World Cup event will be hosted in Santiago in October 2014. Chile’s men won the Mexico event in 2012, while the women fell in the final in 2013. La Roja have been one of the most successful and consistent teams in the tournament in recent years.

The Scotland event included support from the EU Commission office in Scotland, and even involved members of Scottish Parliament. Aside from matches, different organisations under the Homeless World Cup umbrella were able to share their experiences in creating change through sports.

Sport/Life recently assisted in the creation of the short documentary The Homeless Goal. Englishman Kyle Waller first visited Chile to find out more about Accion Total’s Futbol Calle program, before joining the teams in Poznan, Poland, for the 2013 Homeless World Cup.

The story focuses on Carlos Guzman and Priscilla Ibacache, both key players for Chile, as well as people who have had their lives changed through involvement in the program.
