Final warning for Universidad de Chile

Universidad de Chile have been warned that they face the partial closure of their stadium if their fans continue to light flares in international competitions.

Paraguay – The governing body of football in South America, the Conmebol, made the decision after la U fans lit flares in the Copa Libertadores tie against Guaraní at the Estadio Nacional two weeks ago. They believe there is a danger to the public from the fireworks.

Universidad de Chile have been fined US $10,000 and put on probation over the next two years. If there is any repeat offence within that time, the stadium will be partially closed for the next match.

That would signify another financial setback for the azules, who will hope their fans are on their best behaviour when the club begin their group stage participation in the Libertadores this week. La U host Uruguay´s Defensor Sporting at the Estadio Nacional on Thursday night.

The Conmebol´s patience has worn thin because Universidad de Chile have previously been sanctioned for the same type of offences.

Ironically, Universidad de Chile were the innocent party in more serious events at the weekend when Santiago Wanderers fans attacked police at half-time in the match between the two clubs in Quillota.
