Pellegrini enjoys Cup success against old foe Mourinho

Manuel Pellegrini put one over his arch-rival Jose Mourinho as Manchester City knocked Chelsea out of the FA Cup.

Manchester – Two weeks ago, Chelsea won a key Premier League game 1-0 at City and Blues boss Mourinho was said in some quarters to have won the tactical battle against his City counterpart Pellegrini.

Since then, the two have been involved in a war of words that has seen their previously frosty relationship become even icier.

The Premier League victory took the tally to seven wins for Mourinho, one draw and one win for Pellegrini in the matches between their teams.

However, Pellegrini got his own back when the Citizens outclassed Chelsea in the Cup.

Stevan Jovetic tucked home the opener off the post in the 16th minute and Samir Nasri tapped home the second after a superb one-two with David Silva to seal a 2-0 success.

As well as earning Pellegrini his second win over Mourinho, the victory put City into the quarter-finals and kept alive their quadruple hopes.

Now City face another massive test of their credentials. They entertain Alexis Sánchez´s Barcelona in the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday night and will seek to earn an advantage to take to Spain for the second leg.

Meanwhile, Jean Beausejour won the battle of the Chileans in one of the other FA Cup ties on Saturday. His Wigan side, the FA Cup holders, won 2-1 at Premier League Cardiff City, who feature Chile defender Gary Medel in their ranks.

Chris McCann put Wigan ahead in the 18th minute, but Fraizer Campbell levelled things up nine minutes later. Ben Watson, who scored the winner in last year´s final against Manchester City, thumped home the winner from a free-kick five minutes before the break.

Beausejour played the whole match for the Latics, while Medel featured only in the first half for the Bluebirds.
