Naval to be demoted due to financial breaches

Naval have been told they will be relegated to the Second Division by the Chilean Football Association (ANFP) for breaching its financial regulations.

News of the drastic punishment comes just a day before the final round of Primera B games. Ironically, Naval had guaranteed survival, on the pitch at least, by beating Magallanes 1-0 at the weekend.

It meant bottom of the table La Serena and second-bottom Lota Schwager were set to be the teams under threat of relegation to the Second Division tomorrow. They can now breathe a sigh of relief, though Naval are likely to appeal their demotion.

The decision relates to irregularities in the information given by the Talcahuano-based club over pension payments from August 2013 to February 2014.

Naval could even be thrown out of the Chilean Football Association, while they have been fined 1.950 Unidades de Fomento (UF). This is 300 UF for each month from August to February, minus December where the punishment is only 150 UF.

Naval host Unión San Felipe at El Morro at 3.30pm tomorrow, while all the other matches kick off at 9pm. San Marcos and Coquimbo will fight for the automatic promotion place.

The rest of the programme is: La Serena v Deportes Concepción, Curicó Unido v Magallanes, Santiago Morning v Coquimbo Unido, Deportes Copiapó v Barnechea, San Marcos de Arica v Lota Schwager and San Luis de Quillota v Deportes Temuco.
