0Last-gasp Palestino stun U de Conce
A dramatic goal in the dying seconds from Nicolás Suárez gave Palestino victory and ended Universidad de Concepción´s 100 per cent start to the season.
La Cisterna – The fourth round of the Clausura got underway with the match between the top two, but it failed to live up to the billing.
On a sunny Friday evening, it was hard to stay awake as two well organised teams cancelled each other out. And when they did create chances, they couldn´t finish them.
That was until the final moments of stoppage time when the árabes, who badly missed Mexican-bound striker Roberto Gutiérrez, scored the only goal of the match to leapfrog the visitors and go top of the table.
There was an element of controversy about it as U de Conce disputed the decision to award the corner that led to the goal. They lost concentration and organisation for a split second, Sergio López quickly whipped in a corner to the near post and Suárez reacted quicker than anyone to head home.
It meant ecstasy for the home side, but sheer agony for the visitors.
Earlier, López and César Valenzuela fluffed good chances for Palestino in the first half, while U de Conce keeper Cristián Muñoz saved well from López´s second half free-kick.
The visitors gained the upper hand in the second half, but couldn’t capitalise on the chances they created. Palestino weren´t looking like scoring, until the dramatic finale.
Ahead of the rest of the weekend programme, Palestino are top with ten points from 12, while U de Conce slip to second with nine points.
*Palestino are likely to be in more hot water with the Chilean Football Association (ANFP) following the U de Conce match.
In midweek, the árabes were banned from using the controversial number ones on their shirts in the form of old Palestine and fined by the ANFP.
They changed the shirt numbers against U de Conce, but moved the map design to the front of their shirts instead.
