Felipe Aguilar Takes Prize in Singapore

Chilean golfer Felipe Aguilar made a key contribution to a celebratory sporting weekend for Chile, winning the Laguna National tournament in Singapore.

It was a long rage shot on the final hole that gave Aguilar the victory, shooting from long range to achieve an eagle, with his final round of 62 being made up of only 28 strokes on the back nine.

Aguilar tried to play cool after sinking the shot from the fairway, but when rival Anders Hansen missed a putt late in the piece, he was able to breathe a sigh of relief.

It was the second time that the Chilean had won on the European tour. Aguilar also won the South American Games event, which was held in March. His other victory on the geographically challenged tour came in 2008 at the Indonesian Open.

The victory ensures him of a place at the 2015 Volvo Golf Champions event, while his world ranking is likely to rise to inside the top 130 players from outside the top 200.

Having gone into the final round with a four shot deficit, birdies on four consecutive holes made the difference for Aguilar, with his historic shot on the 18th the icing on the cake. The ten-under 62 was the lowest final round by a winner of the tournament, while it was the first time that a golfer had “holed” the second shot of a par 4 to win a European tour event.

The Chilean finished the tournament at 22 under, while Denmark’s Hansen had to share the spoils for second with David Lipsky (USA). Both players finished one shot behind the winner.

Eight under on the back nine to win is pretty strong, especially making the last one on 18 being between clubs. This is something very, very special,” Aguilar said to the European Tour official website. To add to the special nature of the victory, the Chilean golfer will collect 180,531.48 euros for the victory.

Aguilar has returned to Chile before he travels to the next event in Spain.
