Chile have to settle for sixth

Chile´s hopes of finishing the South American Basketball Championships on a high note were dashed as they went down 75-49 to Paraguay at Isla Margarita, Venezuela.
In the play-off for fifth and sixth place, it was Paraguay who started the brighter. They led 21-9 at the end of the first quarter and extended their advantage to 42-22 by half-time.
La Roja showed their fighting spirit to win the third quarter 17-15, but Paraguay stepped up a gear in the last to wrap up a comfortable 75-49 victory.
José Fabio top scored for Paraguay with 18 points, the same figure as Chile´s leading points scorer Sebastián Suárez. Other scorers for Chile included Gerardo Isla (eight), Jorge Valencia (seven) and Erik Carrasco (six).
In the tournament, Chile won two matches and lost three. In Group B, they lost their opening two matches against Uruguay (52-92) and Venezuela (55-76) before beating Peru 85-70.
In the fight for the minor positions, Chile beat Ecuador 74-57 before losing to Paraguay in their final match.
Hosts Venezuela won the title by beating Argentina 74-65 in the final, while Brazil defeated Uruguay 66-61 to take third place. Ecuador saw off Peru 90-63 to finish seventh.
