0Big boost for Grimalts ahead of South American Games
The Grimalt cousins Marco and Esteban warmed up for the South American Games in perfect style with victory in Peru.
Lima – The Chilean number ones ran out narrow winners in a nailbiting final of the fourth round of the South American beach volleyball circuit.
They edged out the Venezuelan pair of Igor Hernández and Jesús Villafañe 2-1 (21-15, 25-27, 15-13) in just over an hour.
Marco, 24, said: “This helps us a lot in our preparation for the South American Games. We played a great championship and we´re happy.
“Now we´ll go to Santiago to train at the Games venue. We want to know it before the rest of our rivals and to get used to it to do a good championship.”
His cousin, Esteban, 23, said: “The key was to withstand the pressure throughout the game and we did that thanks to the level and resources that we have at this moment.
“We will arrive very focused to the South American Games. The idea is to improve on our performance in Medellin in 2010 where we obtained the bronze.
“You have to go game by game. We know all the rivals and we only have to play our own game.”
The South American Games beach volleyball competition takes place at Parque Peñalolén from March 12 to 15.
Meanwhile, the victory in Peru helped the Grimalts to climb to second place in the South American rankings with 680 points. Brazil lead the way with 720.
