0Tomás González Set to Retire After Rio Olympics
Chilean gymnast Tomás González has announced that his career as an elite athlete will come to an end after the 2016 Olympics.
After starring in the South American Games, where gymnastics was one of Chile’s most successful sports. Both gymnastics and water skiing provided 13 medals, with González showing the form that saw him take fourth place at the London Olympics in both floor and vault. He won gold on both events.
In an interview with El Mercurio, González said Brazil will be the end of his career as an athlete, that he will focus on his studies and gymnastics academy. “I will retire from the elite, it will close my cycle at this level and I will focus on other projects,” the gymnast said.
González added he is working on a new jump which should put him among the best in the world on the vault.
The planned retirement comes after archer Denisse Van Lamoen announced she will put down the bow to focus on finishing her law degree. Both athletes and sports administrators in Chile have called universities “the graveyard of the athletes”, with the student life seemingly incompatible with the life of an athlete, despite the practice being very common in other parts of the world.
