0Sava unmasked as new O’Higgins manager
O’Higgins have unmasked the man to replace Eduardo Berizzo as manager – former Fulham striker Facundo Sava.
The Argentinian played for the Whites from 2002 to 2004 and was best known for his goal celebration in which he put on a mask which he’d kept in one of his socks.
In an extensive playing career, Sava also played for the likes of Boca Juniors and Gimnasia y Esgrima de la Plata in his home country and Celta Vigo in Spain.
It was at Celta that Sava was a team-mate of Berizzo and it’s been reported that the latter recommended him for the O´Higgins job.
However, the Rancagua-based outfit are taking a gamble because the 40-year-old, who has signed a one-year deal, has limited managerial experience.
He was in charge at Argentinian B Nacional clubs San Martín de San Juan (2012) and Unión de Santa Fe (2013).
And taking over the managerial reins from Berizzo, who has been linked with the Celta Vigo and Universidad Católica jobs, won’t be easy. The Argentinian guided O´Higgins to the first league title in their history and won the Chilean Supercopa in his two years in charge.
In a statement, the O’Higgins board of directors said: “We are fully confident in his professional and personal capacities, and also in his ability to maintain the successful line that his predecessors have achieved.”
