0San Luis and Barnechea into final after late drama
San Luis de Quillota will meet Barnechea for a place in Chile´s Primera División after winning dramatic play-off semi-finals.
San Luis held a 2-1 advantage from the first leg of their Primera B play-off against Coquimbo Unido, but most pundits still fancied the Pirates to turn things around on home turf.
The visitors defended resolutely to protect their lead, but Coquimbo eventually broke the deadlock in the 77th minute through Cristian Ledesma.
And it looked as though the Pirates had plundered the overall victory when Juan Pablo Miño scored their second in the 88th minute.
Apertura winners San Luis looked down and out, but, incredibly, Daniel Vicencio netted in the 94th minute to make it 2-1 and force a penalty shoot-out.
The Canaries then triumphed 6-5 on spot-kicks after keeper Fernando de Paul saved Sergio Núñez´s effort.
The other semi-final between Barnechea and Santiago Morning also had a thrilling finish. Morning had won the first leg 1-0 away and were favourites to reach the final at La Pintana, but Barnechea had other ideas.
A Washington Torres own-goal gave them the lead in the 35th minute and it looked as though the tie would go to penalties.
However, Bibencio Servín popped up in the second minute of stoppage time to make it 2-0 and put Barnechea into the final at the expence of the devastated Microbuseros, who had Torres sent off after the decisive goal.
San Luis and Barnechea will now meet over two legs to decide who joins San Marcos de Arica in the top-flight.
The Canaries host the first leg at the Bicentenario Lucio Fariña on Sunday (noon), while Barnechea play their home second leg at San Carlos de Apoquindo next Wednesday, May 28 (6pm).
