1Podlipnik Powers on in Córdoba
Hans Podlipnik has smashed past Brazil’s Joao Souza for the best win of his career, to move on past the second round of the Córdoba Challenger.
Having returned to his career best ranking of 211, the Chilean had a point to prove in the Challenger. Having dominated the courts at the Futures level, “H-Pod”, has a disappointing record in Challengers. The victory over number 97 Souza was Podlipnik’s first over a top 100 player and revenge for their only other encounter, last week’s first round loss at the San Juan Challenger.
It was a straight sets victory, with Podlipnik breezing through 6-4, 6-3. He is the only player remaining flying the Chilean flag, with Gonzalo Lama and Nicolás Jarry falling in the first round. The challenge continues with highly regarded Argentinean player Facundo Bagnis (118) up next.
Jarry and Podlipnik also remain alive in the doubles tournament with their respective partners. Podlipnik teamed up with Tomislav Brkic to beat Ruben Ramírez Hidalgo and Jordi Samper-Montana 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 to reach the quarter finals.
In Peru, both Juan Carlos Sáez and Cecilia Costa have reached the semi-finals with their partners, while Andrea Koch has moved through to the second round in singles in Colombia.
