Pellegrini goes for Premier League glory

Manuel Pellegrini has already put the League Cup in the trophy cabinet, but winning the Premier League title would make him a real Manchester City hero.

The Citizens go into Sunday´s final game of the season at home against West Ham with a two-point lead over nearest rivals Liverpool.

However, City also have a superior goal difference (+63 to +50), so they effectively only need a point to wrap up the title.
A couple of weeks ago it looked as though Liverpool were on the way to ending their 24-year title drought, but a costly home defeat against Chelsea paved the way for City to step in and take charge.

A convincing 4-0 home win against Aston Villa in midweek lifted City to the summit and now they are within touching distance of their second crown in three seasons.

The pressure is on at moneybags City to win trophies – and two for Pellegrini in his first season managing in England would mean he has responded.

The 60-year-old former Real Madrid and River Plate boss has won plenty of trophies in his career, but claiming the Premier League would arguably be his finest achievement.

The Chilean said: “Now we are top and I hope we are not going to lose on Sunday, but we must play the way we played against Villa, and the way we have played all season.

“Winning the title is very important but so is the way we are going to win it. There are many ways to win it but I chose this one – attractive football.”

With one game left, City have already notched up 100 goals this season.

Mid-table West Ham have nothing to play for, but will seek to spring a surprise at the Etihad Stadium. Liverpoool, meanwhile, must beat Newcastle at home to take advantage if City do slip up. The matches kick off at 10am, Chilean time.
