0Díaz is the new manager of San Marcos
Newly promoted San Marcos de Arica have given Fernando Díaz the challenge of keeping them in the Primera Division.
It was Luis Marcoleta who guided San Marcos to promotion, but he has since left the club to take over at Everton, who, ironically, have just been relegated to the Primera B.
That left a top-flight manager´s job available and Díaz is the man to have bagged it. It promises to be a tough challenge – the last time San Marcos won promotion, in 2012, they suffered relegation immediately.
By a quirk of fate, Díaz was previously the successor of Marcoleta at Ñublense in 2008 and guided them to Copa Sudamericana classification in his first season.
His last managerial job was at Guatemala´s Municipal last year.
Díaz got a look at his new charges in their 2-0 win at Iquique in the Copa Chile on Sunday and was impressed with what he saw.
He said: “It´s difficult to draw conclusions from just one game, but there are a group of players already in the squad that could do a job.”
