Chile’s Grimalts on top of the World

The latest Beach Volleyball World Rankings have Chile’s Esteban and Marco Grimalt still at the top of the charts.

After a successful run on the South American circuit, the Chilean Grimalt cousins stepped up to the world level, participating in the Puerto Vallarta, where they finished fifth after falling to Germans Finn Ditelbach and Eric Koreng (21-15, 21-19).

The Northern Hemisphere is just beginning to kick off their season, with South American pairs able to earn more points. The Grimalts, who have been on top of the chart since March, have a total of 2,064 points from 8 tournaments. Latvian outfit Aleksandrs Samoilovs/Janis Smedins are in second place on the rankings, with the Mexican tournament victory giving them a key boost. They have 1,570 points after three outings.

It’s all Latin America at the top of the table, with Argentina’s Ana Gallay and Georgina Klug on top of the charts with 2,752 points after ten appearances. Like the Grimalts, the Argentinian pair finished with silver at the South American Games after falling to Brazil.

After seven rounds on the South American circuit, the Grimalts are in equal first in Brazil with 1,260 points. The next event on that tour will be held in Colombia between May 30 and June 1.
