Seguel and Costa impress in Colombia

Daniela Seguel and Cecilia Costa have both made encouraging starts in the US $50,000 ITF of Medellin tournament.

Colombia – Chilean number one Seguel got the ball rolling when she beat the home country´s Yuliana Lizarazo 6-1, 7-6 (1) in the first round.

The 21-year-old, who is at a career high 265 in the world rankings, will meet either Argentina´s Maria Irigoyen, the fifth seed, or Italy´s Anastasia Grymalska in the last 16.

Costa followed up Seguel´s success by earning a confidence-boosting victory against Australia´s Monique Adamczak.

Costa was ranked 55 places below her 31-year-old opponent at 435, but battled hard to win through 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1.

The 21-year-old will now face either top seed Mariana Duque-Marino, of Colombia, or Italian qualifier Gaia Sanesi in the second round.

Costa recently lost grant funding after failing to retain her two South American Games titles from Medellin four years ago, so the win was just what she needed.

In addition, Seguel and Costa are through to the quarter-finals of the doubles. They beat Paula Perez-Garcia (Colombia) and Daniella Roldan (USA) 6-2, 6-2.

They now face a stern test against top seeds Irina-Camelia Begu, of Romania, and Irigoyen.
