0Wheelchair aces serve up victories in Holland
Chile´s wheelchair tennis aces had a day to remember in the World Team Cup in Holland.
The women´s team brushed Kenya aside 3-0 in their opening Pool A match. Macarena Cabrillana thrashed Jane Ndenga 6-0, 6-1, while Francisca Mardones proved far too strong for Phoebe Masika, winning 6-0, 6-0.
In the doubles, Cabrillana teamed up with María Paz Díaz to beat Ndenga and Rahel Akoth 6-1, 6-1.
The thumping victory puts Chile in good heart ahead of their decisive Pool A match against holders Holland tomorrow. The Dutch also beat Kenya 3-0 and are the top seeds, so Chile will have to play at their very best to beat them and reach the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, the junior team pulled out all the stops to beat Great Britain and earn fifth place in their competition.
The match was all-square after the two singles matches. Chile´s Alexander Cataldo beat Nicholas Smelt 6-2, 6-1, but Brayan Tapia lost 6-0, 6-1 against Luz Merry.
However, Chile won a hard-fought doubles match to earn a 2-1 win. Cataldo and Tapia teamed up to beat Merry and Smelt 6-4, 5-7, 10-3.
The Chilean juniors had earlier finished third in Pool B. They lost 3-0 to both Spain and Russia, but overcame Turkey by the same margin.
