Number one Hans back to winning ways

He became Chilean number one a few weeks ago and then had to watch as his compatriots notched up a host of victories while he nursed a back injury.

But Hans Podlipnik (224) is already back in action and on the winning trail. The 26-year-old accepted a wild card into the low-key Spain Futures 8 in Lleida and it´s paying dividends.

The top seed defeated Russia´s Alexander Zhurbin (794) 6-4, 6-4 in the first round and then saw off the host country´s Pol Toledo Bague (607) 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

In the quarter-finals, Podlipnik beat another Spaniard, Marc Giner (375), the fifth seed, 6-2, 7-5.

In Saturday’s semi-final, he meets Spain’s David Vega Hernandez (495), the sixth seed.

Meanwhile, fellow Chilean Nicolás Jarry (613) is through to the quarter-finals of the United States Futures 13 event in Orange Park, Florida.

The 18-year-old defeated the USA’s Martin Redlicki (1,585) 6-3, 6-4. He meets another American, Bjorn Fratangelo (429), the third seed, in the last eight.

However, Christian Garín’s winning run has come to an end. The 17-year-old (412), who won the Brazil Futures 4 last week, lost 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 against Romania´s Catalin-Ionut Gard (633) at Orange Park.
