Hans Podlipnik to be New Chilean Ace

After beating top seed Dennis Kudla (USA), Hans Podlipnik will be Chile’s best ranked player in the next version of the ATP rankings.

While the focus of the day was on Paul Capdeville announcing his retirement, Podlipnik made his own headlines, defeating the visitor 6-7 (11), 6-3, 6-2.

With the first set going through an extensive tie break – up to 11 points, Podlipnik made the most of the conditions to power through the following to sets for the most important victory of his career. Kudla is currently ranked 109 on the ATP lists.

With Capdeville falling to Australian James Duckworth, Podlipnik is the only remaining Chilean in the tournament. The local representative will face Eduardo Schwank (331) in the quarter finals.

After the match, Podlipnik said, “With this victory I am number one in Chile on my own merit, not due to the retirement of Capdeville.” He also noted his great disappointment and not being called up for the Davis Cup squad.

Despite being a public holiday, the tournament will continue on Friday at Club Palestino, with entrance prices moving up to 8,000 pesos for a day ticket with the arrival of the quarter finals.
