0Paris shows plenty of promise
Fencer Paris Inostroza showed he could be timing his preparations for the South American Games to perfection with an impressive performance in Germany.
Berlin – The Chilean, ranked 100 in the world, came eighth in the International Fencing Tournament of Berlin.
That was no small achievement considering that the competition brought together more than 250 fencers from all over the world, including the Olympic champion Rubén Limardo, of Venezuela.
Inostroza started with three wins and three defeats to finish third in his pool and qualify for the main draw with 128 competitors.
The 41-year-old beat Poland´s Mateusz Nycz (141) 15-10 in the first round and followed it up by seeing off Russian´s Andrey Kurochkin 15-8. Germany´s Niklas Multerer (246) was his next victim, Inostroza triumping 15-11.
In the last 16, the Olympic veteran took the scalp of Francisco Limardo (58), the brother of the Olympic champion, 15-14.
However, his winning run was brought to a halt when German Christoph Kneip (705) defeated him 15-10 to reach the semi-finals.
