Grimalts show their class in Colombia

Esteban and Marco Grimalt showed yet again why they are such a top-notch beach volleyball duo by winning the eighth stage of the South American Championships in Medellin, Colombia.

The Grimalts proved too strong for Venezuela’s Vicente Salazar and Gerardo Mendez in the semi-finals, triumphing 21-14, 21-16.
That earned them a place in the final against the Brazilian duo of Harley Silva and Jo Gomes. Brazil started the stronger and took the first set 21-18.

The Chileans dug deep and took the match into a decider by winning the second set 21-15. In an enthralling final set, it was the the Grimalts who kept their nerve to triumph 15-13.

A delighted Esteban Grimalt said: We’re very happy with the victory and our results all season. The final was very difficult. We changed strategy in the second set and we had a little bit of luck on the last point.”
Meanwhile, the Chilean women’s duo of Francisca Rivas and Camila Pazdirek finished fourth in Colombia.

They lost 2-0 to Uruguay’s Lucia Guigou and Fabiana Gomez in the third-fourth place play-off (21-18, 21-15).
