U de Conce swoop for Sáez

Universidad de Concepción have shown their intentions for the coming year by snapping up Tinguiririca SF captain Patrick Sáez.

Concepción – U de Conce just missed out on reaching the Liga Nacional Movistar semi-finals last season and are determined to do better this time around.

So who better to recruit than the experienced Sáez, who played a major role as Tinguiririca won the Liga Nacional Movistar just a few weeks ago.

Since then, the San Fernando outfit have been hit by financial problems that threatened their existence. It seems they will now play on, though it´s no surprise that their star men have been looking to secure their future elsewhere.

In addition, U de Conce have confirmed that Evandro Arteaga, Eduardo Marechal, Jorge Vásquez, Matías Villágran and Yonathan Nehring will remain with them for 2014.

Gabriel Schanberger will coach the team and he will be assisted by Sandro Figueroa. Their first challenge will be the Libcentro competition, which is scheduled to begin in April.

Meanwhile, Colegio Los Leones have made an excellent start in the prestigious Liga de las Américas competition.

In their opening match in Quito, Ecuador, Los Leones beat the home country´s Mavort 100-90. Jamal Johnson led the way with 29 points, while John Thomas and Claudio Naranjo both scored 21. Stanley Jones made 14 rebounds and chipped in with 14 points.

This weekend, Los Leones face Puerto Rico’s Capitanes de Arecibo and Brazil´s Flamengo in their other group matches.
