San Marcos face Colo Colo in tasty Apertura opener

Newly-promoted San Marcos de Arica will take on champions Colo Colo in the opening match of the Primera Division later this month.

While Chile’s agonising World Cup exit is still fresh in the mind, attention will soon switch to domestic action as the Apertura gets underway on Saturday, July 19. San Marcos will host the albos at the Carlos Dittborn at 12.30pm and a packed crowd will be expected.

Let’s hope there’s no repeat of the ticket chaos outside the ground when the sides last met in the top flight in the Torneo de Transición in 2013.

There are three other matches on the opening day. Julio César Falcioni’s Universidad Católica entertain Jaime Vera’s Antofagasta in a battle between two new managers (3.30pm). Promoted Barnechea begin their top-flight life with a trip to Valparaíso to take on Santiago Wanderers (6pm), while there’s a colonial derby at the Bicentenario La Florida between Audax Italiano and Unión Española (8.30pm).

There are five matches the following day. Palestino get the ball rolling when they face Cobreloa at La Cisterna at 12.30pm, while there are three matches at 3.30pm – Unión La Calera v O´Higgins, Huachipato v Ñublense and Deportes Iquique v Universidad de Concepción.

The opening round finishes at Santa Laura with a clash between Martín Lasarte’s Universidad de Chile and Copa Sudamericana qualifiers Cobresal (6pm).

Meanwhile, Colo Colo will host arch-rivals Universidad de Chile in the 11th round on October 11, Universidad de Chile face Universidad Católica in the 13th round on November 1 and Católica entertain Colo Colo in the 15th round on November 23. The Apertura finishes on the weekend of December 5 to 7.
